Stolen Treasures for Oboe and Piano
Dan Willett & Natalia Bolshakova, Natalia Bolshakova, Dan Willett
Oboist Dan Willett can't resist transcribing works written for other instruments for the oboe and this recording is a testament to not only his transcription abilities but also to his fine performances of repertoire not originally intended for oboe. Three works by Mozart, Grieg, and Prokofiev make up this recording the Mozart and Grieg originally written for violin and the Prokofiev for flute. Willett is a professor at the University of Missouri School of Music. In addition to frequent solo and chamber recitals, Willett has performed with numerous orchestras and at festivals. His collaborator is Natalia Bolshakova, who enjoys and active performing career.

"The selections are Mozart’s Sonata in B-flat, K 454, originally for violin, Grieg’s Sonata in F, Op. 8, originally for violin, and Prokofieff’s Sonata in D, originally for flute—all played on a Loree Royal oboe. Both performers are fac¬ulty at the University of Missouri, and Willett is a former student of Daniel Stolper at Michigan State. Their sounds are well bal¬anced to present all important musical detail. Dan Willett exhibits superb control; he does not play at one preset volume, but expresses the moods as they vary. His technique is impeccable too. From the piano, Natalia Bol-shakova contributes most of the musical content with sensitivity and affection. Together, they produce a satisfying result that reed players and other musicians ought to enjoy."
