Notes

“Illumination” was written by composer Pierre Jalbert; the text is based on the poem “Illumination” by lyricist William Schermerhorn. The A Cappella work, for mixed voices, was commissioned by Essential Voices USA, in 2023, with funds from the Maury Newburger Foundation. The World Premiere took place on December 16, 2023, with Judith Clurman conducting her Essential Voices USA at St. Malachy’s – The Actor’s Chapel, New York City. In describing his piece, Pierre Jalbert comments: “The image of the solitary flame, giving light to the darkness, is at the heart of this new work for choir. Both text and music seek to convey the spirit of hope, goodwill, and fellowship among all people.” Lyricist William Schermerhorn says: “Through the ages, people of all creeds have sought both survival and solace in the near-mystical power of the flame. Whether gathering with others around a massive bonfire or reading, in solitary enjoyment, by the light of a single candle, we embrace the light that draws us for its practical uses and to its symbolic powers of hope and triumph. Light sustains both body and spirit; With ‘Illumination’ it’s my wish for the many sparks amongst us to unite in a renewal of goodwill and kindness, and, with the kindred spirit of music, to fill this world with the beauty and promise of a rising, glorious sun.”

“The Snow” was written by Boston based composer Bill Cutter. The lyrics of “The Snow” are taken from chapter one of Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There (published December 1871 though indicated 1872). The words capture the idea of snow acting as a cozy blanket covering all of nature until the warmth of summer returns.  The World Premiere took place on December 16, 2023, with Judith Clurman conducting her Essential Voices USA at St. Malachy’s – The Actor’s Chapel, New York City.

Christmas Joy is a through-composed work, scored for chorus and string quartet that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. The arrangement and text adaptation are by Josh Clayton and Judith Clurman. The carols heard are Silent Night (music – Franz Gruber; text – Joseph Mohr); Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (music – Felix Mendelssohn; text – Charles Wesley); Angels We Have Heard on High (music – Traditional French; English translation – James Chadwick); O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (music – Gregorian Chant); O Come, All Ye Faithful (attributed to John Francis Wade; English translation – Frederick Oakeley); and Joy to the World (music – attributed to George F. Handel; text – Isaac Watts).    The piece was commissioned by Michael Douris and by the family of James L. Keffer, in honor of his 70thbirthday.  The World Premiere Performance took place on December 16, 2023  with Judith Clurman conducting Essential Voices USA and The Essential Strings, at St. Malachy’s – The Actor’s Chapel, New York City. “Christmas Joy” can be performed in the original version, for chorus and string quartet. A version for keyboard is also available.

The recording of these works was made possible by the Michael Douris, the family of James. K. Keffer, the Billy Rose Foundation, the Maury Newburger Foundation and individual contributions. “Illumination” was commissioned by Essential Voices USA with funds provided by the Maury Newburger Foundation. “Christmas Joy” was commissioned by Essential Voices USA with funds provided by Michael Douris and the family of James K. Keffer in honor of his 70th Birthday.

Texts

Out of the darkness…
A spark! Aglow.
Nourished
By earth.
Embraced
By air.
Entwined.
Scattering shadow.
Dispersing despair.
Flames flicker.
Flames brighten
And shine!
Out of the darkness…
The many sparks grow.
Sharing warmth.
Sharing hope.
On this night
Sharing light
With everyone.
A blazing sun!
Out of the darkness…
We shine!

I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know,
with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”

by Lewis Carroll

Stille Nacht!
Heilige Nacht!
Stille Nacht!
Stille Nacht, helige Nacht,
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute, hoch heilige Paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in Heavenly peace,
Sleep in Heavenly peace.
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Alleluja!
Christ, der Retter ist da,
Christ, the Savior is born!
Silent night, holy Night!
Shepherds quake at the sight:
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born,

Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the new-born King!
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!”
Gloria!
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With angelic host proclaim:
“Christ is born in Bethlehem.”
