Notes

This project is about music whose texts aim to inspire audiences to get involved in confronting the challenges of the world by: listening to the world around us, saving the planet, and solving the immigration crisis. Composers and lyricists include Judith Clurman, William Schermerhorn, Robert Sirota, Victoria R. Sirota, and Matthew Sklar.

Listen to the World was written by Judith Clurman in 2024. It is scored for mixed voices and keyboard. The piece teaches us how we must listen to the world for a deeper understanding of people and the world community. Poet William Schermerhorn has written: “In a time of uncertainty, challenge and conflict, I long for each of us to pause and listen to one another. It’s as simple — and as complicated — as that. With the inspired comfort of Judith Clurman’s melody, this work is a plea to ‘to open doors.’ Ever hopeful, I believe we can.” Clurman dedicated the piece to her grandchildren, Penelope Freida and Oscar Hersch Ruben.

Matt Sklar wrote Hymn For The Earth in 2024. It is scored for A Cappella mixed voices. William Schermerhorn’s poetry inspires us to take care of our beloved earth. The composer writes: “Inspired by Bill’s evocative words of hope, I aimed to create music that not only embraces their warmth but also weaves in an extra layer of optimism.”

Victoria Sirota’s sensitive text for Robert Sirota’s A Migrant’s Dream teaches us that we must respect the migrant’s hopes and dreams and support their efforts to seek a better world. The Sirotas are grateful for their own courageous ancestors and deeply troubled by the horrific stories of more recent migrants; they wrote this choral work in 2023, as a reminder of a migrant’s dream of what could be, of what prompts someone to leave their home country and what it is that they are seeking.
